Removing the MGB heater control knobs is not hard if you know the secret.

This is a view of the back of the knob. Note how the octagonal shaft fits inside the knob and the recess for the retaining button.


When assembled, the button snaps into the small hole in the side of the knob. So, to reverse the assembly procedure, use small tool (like an awl) to press the button IN which will allow the knob to slide off.
If you cannot press the button in, try positioning the knob so the retaining button is 'up' and apply a drop of penetrating oil. Give it time to soak in and try again.
