We have in our local bikers group a scientist, among the many interesting people. He took some rubber lubricant to work and analyzed it. Here are the results: From: "Rick Clarke" Organization: Abyss of Clutter Date sent: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 17:33:45 -0400 Subject: Re: Home-brew tire lube > 90-95% = water > 5-7% = Potassium Vegetable Oil Soap > 1-5% = ethylene glycol I read the label a while back and started making my own. I used dishwashing liquid, which might be harsher than Murphy's oil soap. Murphy's sounds like a good choice. At first I just used soap and water. I found that the lube would dry too quickly on hot summer days. I then added the glycol which depressed the vapor pressure sufficiently to keep the lube from drying until I had time to seat the bead, etc. I don't recall if the glycol made the lube much slipperier. -Rick This works out to approximately: 29 oz water 2 oz Murphy's oil soap 1 oz antifreeze Regards, RonB
